概要 | This paper proposes a speech training method whereby native Japanese learning English as a foreign language (EFL) are given
individualized training in pronouncing problematic American English vowel sounds. Having first determined the central tendency and range of the first two formant frequencies characterizing each learner’s vowel space, an individualized set of target utterances was synthesized to conform to each learner’s vowel space. This enabled an online Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) environment to provide learners with examples of 12 American English monophthongs in a consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) context that were intended to sound as if the learners themselves had uttered them. The EFL learners were then trained to identify the vowel sound in those individualized CVC stimuli in preparation for their subsequent training in producing the exemplified 12 American English monophthongs.
